Pedestrian Deaths Would Account For 80% Of All Traffic Fatalities In Accra In 2021, According To A Report.

In Accra, road traffic fatalities involving pedestrians, motorcyclists, and cyclists accounted for 80% of all fatalities in 2021.

According to the data, men made up more than 70% of the fatalities and major injuries, with victims between the ages of 20 and 29 having the highest death rate.

Findings from the report, which uses data from police records to present information on crashes, deaths, and injuries from traffic collisions in the Accra Metropolitan area during 2021, show that the number of reported road traffic crashes in Accra increased by 2% from 1,774 in 2020 to 1,808 in 2021.

Road traffic deaths also decreased, according to the report, from 136 in 2020 to 123 in 2021, a nine percent decrease, with deaths per 100,000 people falling from 6.3 in 2020 to 5.4 in 2021.

In announcing the report, the mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth Kwatsoe Sackey, stressed that statistics from the research revealed an increase in speeding from 50% in 2021 to 51% in 2022 and that speeding remained the primary risk factor for severe traffic crashes both globally and locally.
